2003 Production History
Smash'd (Oregon)
In the Fall of 2003, Sojourn Theatre was an artist-in-residence at Columbia College in Chicago. Artistic director Michael Rohd, company member Hannah Treuhaft, and artistic associate Laura Eason (also an ensemble member at Chicago's Lookingglass Theatre) conducted an intensive 2 week generative rehearsal process on our new work Smash'd. A cast of 16 Columbia undergrads (and Hannah) worked with Eason and Rohd to explore intoxication in America, and created a 40 minute draft of the piece which was performed as part of Columbia's season.
The show played to packed houses ( an extra performance was added). And, a local writing program for youth who were partnering with Columbia and Sojourn on the project became more involved then they ever imagined. After writing material for the show, 2 Chicago youth and their mentor ended up onstage performing their own words. The show was highly physical and imagistic, and will serve as a blueprint as the company continues to explore its themes in the coming year in Portland.

Witness Our Schools (2003-2005)
Witness Our Schools was a 2 & 1/2 year documentary theatre and community dialogue project exploring public education in Oregon. Over 500 interviews, a 65 minute highly physical show, a statewide tour, our town hall dialogue events, and a special performance at the Capitol for the State Legislature - all became a part of the state’s challenging conversation around equitable, fundable policy.
